Bedroom Magic!

Kate's Attic Bedroom ~ Interiors by Monique

The homeowners had an unused and unappealing attic space which we transformed into a colorful, bedroom retreat. Designed to accommodate their nine-year-old daughter, Kate, who wanted a bright fun space for sleepovers with her friends.

By using periwinkle blue on the walls, with white trim, and vibrant bedding, Interiors by Monique created bedroom magic, turning this attic into a functional, desirable place.

Updated Laundry Room

Give your laundry room a whimsical look by adding fashionable wallpaper to your space. Instantly your laundry space will turn from boring to unique.

Beach House Winterized

This home on the Rhode Island shore was extremely drafty during the winter months. Monique’s solution to the problem was to install draperies on a traversing pole to keep the heat in and the cold air out. The design enhanced the smaller window to look more in proportion to the larger window. The home owners were very pleased with the results, now that it is much cozier during the chilly winter months.

Apartment Living

The newly upholstered furniture, window treatments, and art transformed this plain apartment into a welcoming, comfortable, living space.

Before and After Basement Renovation

This basement renovation enhanced and expanded the family’s living space by giving the children an area to play with their friends. When the parents entertain, they enjoy the wine cellar, kitchenette and beautiful bathroom.

5 Simple Ideas for Beautiful Guest Bathrooms

Need to spruce up your bathroom?  These quick and easy ideas will turn a “blah” bath into a guest-ready space in no time.

  1. Get a bold shower curtain
A colorful shower curtain will add a big splash to a neutral bathroom.  Add a few accessories that coordinate with the pattern in the curtain, and the room will feel instantly transformed.
  2. Display the towels
Instead of simply hanging towels on the traditional wall rack, display yours in unique ways.  Roll a few towels and place them on an open shelf or in a basket.  Stack folded towels on a decorative chair.  Present them on a silver platter.  Your towels will become part of the artwork in the room.
  3. Replace the mirror
You don’t need to stick with the flat “builder’s” mirror.  Choose a decorative mirror with a frame suitable to your bathroom’s style.  There are so many shapes, sizes, and styles to choose from, so don’t limit yourself.
  4. Update the hardware
A bathroom can take on an entirely new look when you simply change your cabinet knobs.  You can go bold and colorful to make a statement, or choose elegant shapes and finishes to coordinate with the existing fixtures in the room.
  5. Bring in flowers
A vase of fresh flowers is the perfect bathroom accessory.  Cut fresh blooms from the garden, or purchase a nice bouquet when guests are coming over.  This will not only add a splash of color and a lovely scent, but will evoke a cheerful mood.

Although these ideas are simple, they make a big impact.  So take a little time to update your bathroom.  You’ll love your guests’ reactions.

10 Easy Ways To Go Green

Greening your home to make it more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly doesn’t have to be a difficult process. Use these 10 ideas to get started on going green.

  • Switch to compact fluorescent light bulbs. Replacing just five incandescent bulbs with CFLs can save you $100 per year on electricity bills.
  • Plug air leaks around doors, windows and other spots with weather-stripping and caulk.
  • Use a programmable thermostat to keep the temperature at 78 degrees in summer and 62 degrees in winter when no one is home or everyone is sleeping.
  • Buy Energy Star appliances.
  • Reduce water waste by adding inexpensive aerators to your sink faucets, changing to low-flow showerheads and dual-flush or no-flush toilets.
  • Use no- or low-Volatile organic compound (VOC) paints and cleaning products. VOCs can cause many short- and long-term adverse health effects.
  • Use wood alternatives or sustainable wood products, such as rapidly renewable bamboo flooring or wood cabinets certified by the Forest Stewardship Council.
  • Plant trees to provide shade and wind protection for your home, which will reduce heating and cooling costs, and pick native plants that need less water, fertilizer and pesticides.
  • Make sure your HVAC system is running efficiently. Change filters monthly during peak usage periods.
  • Switch to clean and renewable energy sources, such as solar panels, geothermal heating units or even wind turbines. If that isn’t feasible, you can also sign up for green power through your local utility to help expand the development of these technologies.
